At UMW Recordings Inc., we promote professional, ethical, and safe distribution, which is why we require a valid license for all content that uses non-original compositions.
🧾 What is a cover ?
A cover is a new recording of a previously published musical work composed by another composer. It may remain faithful to the original version or feature slight instrumental or vocal variations.
Important:
If you modify the lyrics, structure, or intent of the original work, your version may be considered an adaptation , not a cover. In that case, it requires direct authorization from the publisher or composer .
🔐 Do I need a license?
Yes. Any digital distribution of a cover requires a mechanical license , which grants the right to fix, reproduce, and distribute the original work. This license must be in effect before uploading the release to the platform .
⚙️ Types of licenses accepted by UMW

📤 How to upload a cover to UMW?
Gather a valid copy of your mechanic's license or authorization.
Upload your release from your dashboard, just like any recording.
In the observations or metadata section, mark as “Covers and Copyrighted Materials” and then I'm not using any other artist's name in my name, song titles, or album title, without their approval.
Attach the license in PDF format if requested, or send it to support.
Awaiting validation from the editorial team.
⚠️ Risks of publishing an unlicensed cover
Publishing a cover without the corresponding rights can lead to:
Removal of launch on DSPs (Spotify, Apple, etc.)
Withdrawal of income and blocking of payments
Account suspension
Copyright claims by publishers or composers
Legal claims in international jurisdictions
