While official DSP release artwork must follow static standards, platforms like Spotify and Apple Music allow the use of complementary animated elements , such as Canvas or Motion Art , to enhance the presentation of musical content.
Are animated covers allowed as official release images?
No. Official covers must be static , in .JPG or .PNG format, with no motion, no transparencies, and a 1:1 ratio. However, you can complement your release with animated visuals using each platform's native tools.

Apple Music Motion Art – Animated Album Cover
Apple Music allows the use of Motion Artwork (animated album covers), which are displayed on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Smart TVs. It's important to follow the specific guidelines regarding length, resolution, and format.
Key recommendations:
The movements should be smooth and subtle , especially for the Listen Now section.
A mandatory static version of the artwork must be included for backup

UMW can manage the delivery of these animated files to Apple Music as part of its direct infrastructure with DSPs. Unsolicited or non-standard content will be rejected.
Legal considerations
All animated content must be copyright-free or have approved usage rights.
Unlicensed use of third-party material is not permitted.
The static image should always accompany the animated version, especially for slow connections or settings that disable animations.
